We all know the economy hasn’t been doing well the past few years. Most notably, the housing and construction industries have suffered tremendous setbacks. However, after several lean years, the home remodeling industry is starting pick up not only in certain areas around the country but also nationwide as a whole. This is in part thanks to a slight rise in existing home sales and existing home sale prices and continued low interest rates.
According to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) residential remodeling expenditures for owner-occupied improvements are growing nationally. Spending for 2011 topped $107.4 billion, up 3.5% from 2010. NAHB also tracks an index of remodeling contractors’ confidence and this index hit its highest level in five years in the last quarter of 2011.
Although overall spending has steadily increased, homeowners are spending more cautiously than they were before the economy crashed in 2008. This is causing homeowners to focus more on projects that most need renovating to keep up with modern trends and to keep up the overall value of the homes. Projects like kitchens and bathrooms are particular good investments in today’s remodeling market.
According to a Boston Globe report “between 2003 and 2008, there was a lot of upper-end activity. People were doing expensive kitchen projects. What we hear now is that they’re not gutting everything, but picking and choosing aspects to update.”
This particular trend is especially true for homeowners in the Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Maryland markets. Homeowners want to make sure that they are getting the absolute best bang for their buck and are much more specific and demanding of where their dollars are being spent. This is a product of homeowners focusing most on what they need versus what they want.
Homeowners are also doing much more homework when it comes to selecting the type of fixtures and appliances they need to add to their remodeling projects. Homeowners aren’t looking so much at what they want to install but what is best for the overall value of their home and what is mostly likely to sell. Most homeowners are still a little timid about having their house stand out too much as the market is still tilted towards home buyers.
Fortunately, as the market and home owners evolve, so too does Elite Home Remodeling. We make sure to stay up to date with all of the latest trends and developments in the residential remodeling market and we make sure to give our award-winning service to every home owner we work with. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need loads of cash to remodel or renovate your house. There are plenty of projects that Elite Home Remodeling can do for you without breaking the bank.
A great way to update a boring laundry room or mud room is to add a built-in bench, some new shelves or some beadboard paneling. These great additions will not only provide plenty of organizational and storage space, but you will get plenty of new design elements out of a once boring room.
In the kitchen, upper cabinets are a great way to increase the amount of storage space. Having taller upper cabinets allows you to not only store more things in your kitchen, but it will also make your room look taller which in turn gives your kitchen more value. Another great tip for your kitchen remodeling project is to refinish or reface your existing cabinets. This is a small fix that can make your kitchen look brand new. Plus, doing something as simple as changing the cabinet door hardware can give your kitchen a new style.
If you are looking to do some work in your dining room, a great and less expensive way to improve the look of the room is to add some chair railing and wainscoting. Keep the profiles of these trim features low and you will be surprised at just how affordable they really are.
Sometimes staying flexible is the secret to renovation success. No matter what room you are looking to remodel, always be on the lookout for discounted materials and fixtures at specialty stores. This is a great way to keep the overall cost of your projects down. Even ask your contractor if they have any leftover materials from previous jobs that they can use on your job.
Just because you are on a budget, does not mean you have to sacrifice style and elegance in your new renovations. Keep searching for unique and creative solutions and you can have a great looking home. Be sure to call Elite Home Remodeling to find out how we can serve you today!
It’s a classic design dilemma: a couple is ready to make a house a home, only to find out that their styles couldn’t be more different. This is an all too common problem that often leaves one party with too little influence. This post will help you take the best of both styles and blend them into one great renovation.
Traditional, Meet Modern
Take for example a Fairfax family of three was ready to build their dream home. They hired an architect and interior designer to create a cozy but spacious home that would balance her love for modern and his love of traditional. For those of you keeping track at home, modern and traditional styles don’t always see eye to eye.
The couple already had already selected a house in between Fairfax and Reston. Although they initially wanted to tear down the home completely and start from scratch, they quickly realized the home was in excellent structural shape and did not need a complete tear down. So, the design idea was set in motion; design a bright and open home that embraces the outdoors — and the couple’s opposite styles.

Despite their differences in styles, the new home owners agreed that they wanted a home that felt open and bright – something that would work well with both of their styles. A great way to blend traditional and modern design elements is by going with more traditional building elements – such as hardwood flooring, eight foot tall doors and tall base boards. Then to compliment her style, bring in modern furniture. That way if you ever sell your house in 10 – 20 years, you won’t be left wondering what happened to your modern style.
Another great design feature that crosses over all styles is natural light. Adding as many double pane, low-e windows as possible will not only help with the sustainability of your home but also increase the amount of time you’ll enjoy spending inside your home. Make sure to add lots of windows to common areas like living rooms and family rooms. Also be sure to add a window or two in hallways and corridors. This make those narrow passage ways more usable.
Next time you and your significant other argue over design styles, don’t fret! There is always room for both styles in your home remodeling project. Make sure to give Elite Home Remodeling a call to find out how we can help you with your next home remodeling project.
The Better Business Bureau or BBB is an organization aiming to promote and foster the highest ethical relationship between business and the public through voluntary self-regulation, consumer and business education, and service excellence. A BBB accredited business is an ethical company that believes that customer service and ethics comes first in all areas of business.
Since its inception, Elite Home Remodeling has been operating by similar standards set forth by the BBB and other ethical and credible associations. Now, we have finally made it official.
Elite is a part of the Washington D.C. and Eastern PA chapter of the BBB. It has been serving the people of the Mid-Atlantic region since 1920, and continues a commitment to help make the Mid-Atlantic region a better place to do business.
The BBB sets forth high standards for business to follow and they grade these businesses on certain characteristics. Only certain companies can become BBB accredited and only the best of the best achieve top rankings. The standards by which the Better Business Bureau grades a company are a comprehensive set of best practices for how businesses should treat the public in a fair and honest manner.
BBB accredited businesses must meet certain standards to qualify for accredited business status and to remain an accredited business. Many BBBs publish their entire accredited business list, or you may request a list of BBB accredited businesses in a specific business category. Reliability reports from most BBBs also state whether a business is accredited.
In 2010, the BBB received 2,983,238 searches for home contractors, repairs, and service people. Of those searches, only 2,518 consumers sought to file a complaint. That is 0.08% of BBB accredited contractors who received complaints. It just goes to show that when you are dealing with an accredited BBB contractor, you are going to be working with the best.

We specialize in kitchen, bathroom and basement remodels as well as roofing and siding renovations. Elite proudly serves home owners, property management firms, community associations, insurance providers and small businesses.

We have recently expanded our services to cater to not only home owners looking to renovate their kitchens, bathrooms and basements but we also offer our services to insurance providers for restoration work. One of the biggest decisions you will make when doing some home remodeling work is deciding which contractor to use. There are hundreds of thousands of contractors out there and unfortunately not all of them are good. Sadly, many people have had bad experiences with contractors which leads to a bad reputation for all contractors throughout the Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Maryland communities.
Fortunately, there are always a few good apples in the bunch to make you forget about all of your previous problems with contractors. Elite Home Remodeling is one of those good apples.
Recently, I had a conversation online with a friend who had used many different contractors in the past and had many bad experiences. Our conversation will better highlight what Elite Home Remodeling does right and what you should be looking for in every contractor you hire.
Finding a good contractor has been the bane of my existence. You would think they would want my business!
What have been some of issues and frustrations you have had with contractors? What are the things (if any) you’ve liked about working with them?
- Finding someone that is willing to do both small and large jobs.
- Finding someone that is highly recommended by people I trust.
- Finding someone that is willing to dream with me, rather than telling me “oh no, that can’t be done” or “well, that would be expensive.”
- Finding someone who shows up when they say they’re going to show up.
- Finding someone who delivers what they promise.
Those all are things that should be at the core of every contracting business. Here’s my two cents on your list:
- Elite Home Remodeling loves to do the little jobs and we love to do the little jobs well. We feel that the best way to gain your trust is do the little things well and they will lead to big results.
- Almost 85% of our work comes from repeat clients and they love what we do. Everyday we are expanding our reach by our clients giving us reviews online for everyone to see.
- We like to keep “dream boards” ourselves about what we would love to see in a kitchen, bathroom, basement, etc remodel. Check it out!
- Business 101. 8:00 AM means 8:00 AM. If you can’t even trust someone to show up on time, how can you expect them to do a job successfully? And if we are ever running late, we will call and tell you and never leave you wondering.
- We make sure that during the estimating and proposal process we thoroughly go over exactly what you want and what we will be providing. That way you are never surprised by the end result. And if something doesn’t look quite right, we’ll make sure to fix it exactly the way you want it.
Thanks for the help Margie. Hopefully the next time you have a remodeling or improvement project to take care of, Elite Home Remodeling will be there serve you!
This conversation is typical of many conversations I’ve had with many home owners who have had bad experiences with contractors in the past. Fortunately, all of the painful headaches associated with contractors will be gone when you decide to use Elite Home Remodeling. Check us out today!
In your search to improve and expand your personal and business network, there are many individuals and industries that you should have in your network. One of the most important relationships you can create is with a contractor, especially a remodeling and renovation contractor.
There are many pros and cons to consider when developing a relationship with a remodeling contractor. Fortunately, the benefits certainly outweigh the negatives. Although you might not need a remodeling contractor on a daily or even weekly basis, eventually you will need the services of a remodeling contractor. Either something will break or be damaged and you will need the services of an elite remodeling contractor or you will want to improve your home or your business to add value to your property. An expert remodeling contractor can take care of all of your needs and your wants.
The draw backs to developing a relationship with a contractor are the same draw backs to developing a relationship with any new individual or industry: it is always a challenge to meet new people. Fortunately, when determining when to use a contractor, they should provide you with a portfolio of their past projects. These pictures and descriptions should speak for themselves, allowing the contractor’s work to do all the talking.
Everyone can benefit from a relationship with a contractor. A home owner will benefit by being able to trust the work being done in their kitchen or basement. A property manager will know that the roofing repair will be done by a quality contractor. A real estate agent will not only be able to understand the world of construction better to explain to a potential home buyer but they will also be able to provide a strong recommendation when asked about renovation work.
Check out Elite Home Remodeling today to find out how you can develop a lasting relationship with us.
